How it works

Your phone talks to the phones around it.

Messages travel directly between nearby devices over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, end-to-end encrypted, so they keep working when the network is down or overloaded.

The Radar tab in Whispyr on iPhone: James is nearby and connected, with a Chat button.

See who’s around.

Radar lists people nearby who have Whispyr open. Your phones set up an encrypted session directly, with no server in between, and you can start a chat with one tap.

  • No internet neededWorks on a plane, in a basement lecture hall or at a festival where the network gives up.
  • Close, Nearby, FarSignal strength tells you roughly how close someone is.

A room for the place you’re in.

Create a Space for a campus, a venue or an event and share its code or QR code. People nearby join and talk together, and Events keep time-boxed conversations inside a Space.

FAQ

Questions and answers.

Quick answers about how Whispyr works. For anything else, write to support@getwhispyr.app.

Basics

What is Whispyr, in one sentence?

A private messenger for the people right around you that works without internet, an account or message servers.

Do I need a phone number?

No. You just pick a name on your device. No phone number, no email.

How does nearby discovery work?

Open Radar. Devices physically close to you that run Whispyr appear in the list. Tap one to start a chat. If you set yourself to Hidden, you stay off other people’s Radar.

Does it work without internet?

Yes. Whispyr runs on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi between nearby phones. No data connection needed.

Features

What’s the difference between Chats, Spaces and Events?

Chats are one-on-one conversations. Spaces are local hubs for a place: a campus, a venue, a workplace. Events are time-boxed conversations inside a Space.

What are Temp messages?

Short-lived messages designed to disappear, so chats don’t fill up with old context.

Can I create a Space for my campus or venue?

Yes. Create a Space and share its code or QR code with the people around you.

Privacy

Where are my messages stored?

On your device. Whispyr has no message server and cannot read your messages. Photos and files you receive can be part of your own iCloud or computer backup of the device.

Can I move Whispyr to a new device?

Yes. Export your profile and chats to an encrypted file with a passphrase you choose, then restore it on the new device. Your new device gets fresh encryption keys. The file never passes through a Whispyr server.

Is Whispyr free?

Yes. Whispyr is free on the App Store for iPhone, iPad and Mac.

Will Whispyr replace my main messenger?

No. Whispyr is a specialised tool for nearby moments. Use it alongside your main app, not instead of it.
